Suski is placed in movie purgatory

Rambling Dave's picture

It was Suski's idea to go to Nights in Rodanthe on the weekend. He was going to attempt to cry. Shauna and I were supposed to avoid crying.

(It was during the scene pictured above that I started to laugh so hard I did cry a little tiny bit)

I am placing Rob on movie probation. Nights in Rodanthe is the worst movie I have seen in ten years. The Spongebab Squarepants movie was better -- and it had David Hasselhoff in it. There is not a single syrup sick cliche that is NOT in this movie.

As an example, for many years I have sighted as the worst movie cliche the "cut to the waves washing up on the shore" cliche. In fact, this cliche is SO hackneyed and cliche that no screenwriter or director would dare use this cliche. But, in Nights in Rodanthe... there it is... the WORST movie cliche of all time. Gere and Lane fall into a kiss, cut to waves washing up on the shore, and cut to the two of them in bed in the morning. ARGH! It actually gets worse. The dialogue in bed was so hackneyed I was actually laughing. I didn't want to disturb the theatre so I was as quiet as I could be.

The last fifteen minutes of the movie are OK. Not great, but OK. Sadly, I was hating the movie so much by that time that I just didn't care. Acting good. Cinematography, directing, and script -- HORRIBLE.

Phew.

I need to have a shower.

Cliche is in the eye of the beholder

I haven't seen this flick. I'm talking movies in general.

Criticizing a movie for being a cliche is a waste of time and breath. Somewhere there is a child who will hear "Why did the chicken cross the road?" for the first time and have a giggle fit. Somewhere, a dewy-eyed teenager will see this waves and beach scene and her romantic vision will be fulfilled.

And it's not about being young. It's about being a rookie. Not being jaded with a thousand movies. Not being familiar with the genre.

There is also being such a devout fan of the genre that a few cliches are comfortable old friends.

Of course, good writing is good writing. Even if there is a potential audience for old ideas and cliches, the movie makers shouldn't be lazy enough to churn them out.

Movie

What's up with you Dave and Rob? This movie was absolutely amazing, it was great! Richard Gere and Diane Lane have such great chemistry together, it was well done!

I'm speechless, honestly can't believe you absolutely hate this movie. It's amazing!

There is a review on

There is a review on RottenTomatoes that I think has it right...

"I imagine that the Nicholas Sparks fan base is going to eat this movie
up. However, for myself, it was one of the most boring movies of the
year."

Although I wouldn't use the word boring, I would go with "cliche and predictable."

Fascinating thing about movies and reviews... two people can see the same movie and have completely different experiences.

The overall impression of critics is poor, though. 25% onĀ  RottenTomatoes.com.

Ok Dave and Rob, the movie

Ok Dave and Rob, the movie really isn't that bad. You two make it out to be horrible! Its a chick flick and you two being the "studs" that you are, shouldn't have gone anyways! I totally bawled through it! Would I see it again, probably not, but anything with Richard Gere isn't that bad, he's a hot older man!
