I Love You, Barbie

Shauna Foster's picture

I was watching Oprah the other day, she was celebrating Barbie's birthday.

I LOVED my Barbie. Well, Barbie's...I had a good dozen or so.

All kinds, Barbie friends and even Jem. Looking back, Jem sucked. Sure, her band thing was cool for a while and you got to sing along to her music but she was bigger than Barbie and oddly shaped, so none of Barbie's clothing fit her.

Only one Ken, though, in my bunch. Ken also wasn't much fun. And even at a young age, I wondered why he was so flat and funny-looking in the frontal region. And his hair was plastic. But, I guess you needed the Ken to celebrate the Barbie Wedding. And the wedding, is where my Barbies' really came alive. I had the most pimped out wedding gear around. A homeade dress with a real crinolin, veil and shoes, all made of satin. And yes, I tried to curl Barbie's hair, to an unhappy ending. It got all fried and stuck onto the curling iron. I also attempted to cut her hair, to unsatisfactory results.

And then there was Barbie Bath. She had her own sweet tub and soaps. But alas, she quickly got all black and moldy inside from not drying her off properly. She started to smell and mom made me throw her out.

I was lucky, my babysitter had her own massive collection of Barbie clothes she handed down to me. There were some unfortunate styles from the 70's but I quickly chopped those up into much cooler outfits.

All my Barbie's are packed away in their suitcase under my stairs at home.

I have no idea why I've gone off on this out of the blue but Oprah's show really brought back some awesome memories.

How many Barbie's did you have? Anything extra special you want to let me know about?

Oh, and PS, did you know her real name is Barbara Milicent Roberts?

Barbies....

I didn't have very many Barbies but I cherised the ones I had. I never let anyone play with them, they had to have their own or they got the ugly cheap plastic doll. Barbies were great until my grandmother bought me for my birthday as Jamie Sommers Bionic Woman (Barbie Doll). So there went Barbie and the Bionic Woman became the hero because she could kick anyones butt. She was the doll until I got tired of playing with dolls. I never had any doll houses but I always rigged up my own houses with a doll bunk bed that I received... oh those were the days.

I love Barbies

I had many as well... played thousands of hours with them.. My dad even built me a barbie house complete with Laminate flooring, oak staircase - I still have it!!!! I can't wait to have little ones to play barbies with!!!!

Jem!

Hey Jem was awesome! She had that crazy tv show.. i had a ton of Jem stuff but did have waaaaay more Barbie stuff. Actually I must have been a totally twisted kid because it didnt take me long to realize that the Jem clothes (and especially the shoes) fit Ken PERFECTLY. yes, My ken doll was a crossdresser.

barbie

i got kicked out of a party once when a bunch of us were giving a few barbie dolls...haircuts. thats my barbie story for you.

moral of the story: dont mess with a girls babie collection.

CH.

oh boy

Don't EVEN get me started. Countless barbies, 2 kens, convertible, jeep, one kelly doll... and I think a horse.
Still haven't forgiven those friends of mine who insisted on brushing barbie's hair too hard... once those heads rip off, it's not the same...

Jem is like the drag queen of barbies...

I had 48 barbies, six kens,

I had 48 barbies, six kens, the hot pink convertible, and a massive barbie mansion my aunt made me. She also bought me all of the barbies. She had no kids of her own so she spoiled me!
